Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s an Adam Sandler movie. I know he hasn’t done anything good since Nirvana was around, but go see this film. The action-comedy, which stars Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, and Brian Cox, follows an alien invasion, where the aliens are using items from a time capsule we sent them in the 80s to destroy our earth. James plays the president of the United States who recruits his childhood gaming friends, played by Sandler, Gad, and Dinklage, to take down the gaming bad guys and save our planet. The cast, the nostalgia, everything was great. The stars of I Now a Pronounce You Chuck and Larry reunited to take down enemies like Pac Man and Donkey Kong, what’s not to love about that? As great as Sandler and James are together, both Gad and Dinklage are the underdogs who get as much laughs as the Sandler and James did throughout the film.

The movie has a lot of similarities to Wreck It Ralph, another action-comedy that packs more nostalgia into it than a VH1 special. Not only that, but there’s a scene where the enemies are released from the spaceship that plays out just like the elevator scene in Joss Whedon’s hit Cabin in the Woods. Just as you are getting used to one of the video games or television personalities, another few are introduced.

This film has been getting horrible reviews and it must be because people go into it telling themselves the movie is going to be horrible. It’s either that, or they’re just too afraid to tell people that they actually liked a new Adam Sandler film. If it’s easier, go see the movie for Gad and Dinklage and tell yourself that Sandler and James are just some of the actors in the film.
If you’re staying in tonight and won’t be making it to the theaters to see the Chris Columbus film, rent Sandler’s last film, The Cobbler. It’s got a lot of laughs and a lot of heart and co-stars Steve Buscemi, Dustin Hoffman, and Method Man.. It’s not Click, but it’s great for a recent Sandler film.
